Kontokali Bay is a typical Greek 4star hotel with a 70's feel to it. The main attraction here is the incredible view across to Albania and along the Corfu coast, so booking a sea front (or at least sea facing) room is essential.
Rooms and bathrooms are basic. They have obviously been recently decorated but they are very narrow with dated furniture and rather depressing navy soft furnishings. The showers provide little more than a trickle of water and although robes are provided, there is nowhere to hang them! The corridors outside the rooms are echoey and exacerbate the noise of doors closing. Walls are also quite thin. Housekeeping is once a day, and to be honest, not very thorough

The restaurant is lacking in character but the views are great and it is well air-conditioned. Breakfast is OK but dinner is awful. The same dishes on offer every night consisting mostly of school dinner type meat (mostly pork)stews with frozen sprouts and frozen carrots. The dessert table consists of about 8 dishes of whipped UHT type cream, some decorated with nuts, others with bright pink or blue icing, really appalling. The salad bar was better and there was always fresh fruit and ice-cream. The two restaurant managers perform a rather unique and interesting cabaret act every evening which consists of greeting all guests as if they are long lost brothers and constantly slapping everyone on the back and shaking hands every 5 minutes asking if everyone is 'alright' or 'OK' but running off quickly before anyone has a chance to reply or complain!

This performance is obviously laid on to detract from the poor quality of food being served.
The pool is very clean with lovely views and the two hotel beaches are well kept with plenty of fairly new looking sunbeds. The watersports department is excellent - the best I have seen yet and is very professionally run by Spiros. Do hire one of his little motor boats for the day and cruise up the coast - there are loads of little secluded bays where you can swim off the boat and also lots of little tavernas to lunch at. A wonderful way to explore the pretty coastline.
The lunchtime taverna is of a much higher standard than the main restaurant and is reasonably priced. BBQ'd fish and kebabs with lovely salads and vegetable dishes followed by greek pastries and good quality ice-cream - all of which are absent from the main restaurant apart from during 'Greek Night' which happens once a week.

Service generally is very basic with some of the waiters making you feel they are doing you a favour. We found one of the bar men in the main bar exceptionally surly and off hand . However, Mari and Nelly on reception are extremely friendly and professional and efficient. We had a very relaxing week here and the two teenagers travelling with us enjoyed it too. We did check out another 5 star, but much larger, hotel further up the coast and visible from Kontokali but felt that despite it being smarter, it is Kontokali that has the edge with the stunning views and with a more open, breezier feel to the grounds.
Kontokali Bay is quite isolated with a round taxi trip into Corfu town costing 30 Euros and nowhere nearer to go for a stroll with shops and tavernas. There is a small supermarket just a 5 minute walk down the road. The new Spa looked good but we didn't use it. To sum up, this is a relaxing, unpretentious hotel with fabulous views. If you just want to lie on the beach or by the pool and aren't bothered about what you eat and don't mind basic rooms and service then you will enjoy it here.
