Staying in the same place for two weeks was something of a novelty since our children left home. So it was fortunate that the
hotel Apollon was so comfortable and well-positioned. Our room on the second floor in the main building could not have been better, enhanced as it was by a large balcony overlooking the bay beneath and big enough on which to lie comfortably on sun-loungers. On some days, we were happy just to sunbathe outside our room and occasionally nip down to swim in the sea. As others have made clear, and as you might expect, the main beach of
Paleokastritsa can get crowded in August. Nevertheless, on several days we hired sunbeds and had fantastic days; the bay is really enjoyable to swim in.
And for those who prefer pedalos, canoes and/or motor boats, there were lots of alternatives. The
Apollon hotel was the most popular venue in
Paleokastritsa, but was never too busy or noisy; our room directly above the main bar was very peaceful - even on karaoke nights! Spiro and Karen run an admitable business with great pride in what must be Corfu's finest resort (especially after the day-trippers have left). We hired a car for the full fortnight. Which was definitely worth it, letting us make enjoyable trips to less-accessible villages such as Lakones and Ermones. Corfu Town is, of course, a must-visit - although the short bus journey is a better bet if you don't like driving abroad in traffic. More than 30 years since my wife and I made separate visits (as students), Paleokastritsa remains remarkably unspoiled. And the
Apollon Hotel is the perfect play to stay when you visit.
