The prefecture of Corfu is a group of six islands (Corfu, Paxoi, Antipaxoi, Othonoi, Erikousa, Mathraki) and lots of
other smaller islands. In the south of Corfu and in a 7 mile distance is located the group of islands of Paxoi, a whole of small islands and islets, the most important of which are: Paxoi, Antipaxoi, Moggonisi, Saint Nicolas, Panagia
and Daskalia, in a total area of 22 square kilometers. In the northwest of Corfu are situated the Diapontia Islands - Othonoi, Erikousa, Mathraki, in a distance of 11,8 and 4 nautical miles accordingly, in a total area of 21,6 square kilometers. They were named because of the fact that they are situated in the middle of two seas (in Greek: pontoi), both the Ionian and the Adriatic sea. The mountain of Pantokratoras with an altitude of 914 meters dominates at the northeast of the islanf of Corfu and characterizes morphologically and climatologically all its north part, while at Paxoi the highest point is the summit/peak of Saint Isavros (250 meters), at Antipaxoi is Vigla (106 meters), at Othonoi is Merovigli (393 meters), at Erikousa is Santardo (134 meters) and at Mathraka is Merovigli (161 meters). |
Corfu prefecture has a natural environment of unique beauty which, with the colours of green and blue as well
as with the colourful strokes of the wild flowers, looks as impressive as an art picture constantly transformed.
The alternative agricultural landscape with the woods and the green olive groves at the edge of the hills touching the islands' beaches, compose an aesthetic whole of exquisite beauty. The cultivation of the holy olive tree dominates all around island, transforming it in an immense and continuous olive grove. Being In a plain or half-mountainous, the prefecture of Corfu Greece has a lot of water life places, mainly the riverside and lagoon formations,
Mainly in the island of Corfu, there is a dense net of rivers, dried-up streams and torrents which canalize the rain waters into the sea, The Tiflos river is the biggest riverlike formation in Corfu which keeps water during all the year, Other well known rivers are the rivers of Poli, of Messonghi and of Lefkimmi villages in south Corfu. |
Corfu's countryside has many fresh-water sources, several of those have fresh water of an excellent quality,
such as the source of Nymphes, of Kyprianades, of Klimatia, of Valanios, of Saint Douloi etc. In the north side of Corfu there are two waterfalls (the Kyprianades and Nymphes falls), which, during all the rains period, are especially spectacular, as they fall from a height of at least 15 metres. The most important lagoons of the island are the ones of Antiniotis, of Chalikiopoulos and of Korission. At the municipality of Lefkimmi there are the salt-pans of Lefkimmi. At the mountain of Pantokratoras there are forest areas which have a panoramic view and geological formations, such as the two caves which are located at Klimatia and at Loutses, The characteristic mountain vegetation of a middle altitude includes oak forests which are alternate with cultivated olive trees areas and vineyards. Extremely impressive is the ''stony and rocky" face of the mountain, which is a traditional provider of building material of the whole area |
Corfu island itself could be considered as a big ecosystem composed of the productive tree "Oleo europea''. Olive trees and olive groves participate in various ways in the configuration of Corfu's landscape (for example productively, aesthetistically, protectively). Especially the perennial olive groves create a unique sensation with the endless relief forms and strange figures that carry on their trunks and branches. The olive grove of Paxos, situated in the middle of the rocks and the very little fertile ground, which gives it food and hospitality, is considered one of the most ancient olive groves. Othonoi, Erikousa and Mathraki are also full of olive trees, Besides olive trees, the cypress tree, is the most characteristic tree of Corfu's landscape and often forms cypress groves. The beauty of Corfu nature owns a
lot at the coexistence of the olive and the cypress tree, Wooden areas can be met all around Corfu's olive groves and are consisted of shaggy evergreen phyto-societies, mainly bushes, which characterize all coastal
Mediterranean landscapes. The most important species of these plants are: locust-tree, arias, holm-oak, oak, filiki, arbutus, wild arbutus, myrtle, lentisk, heather, arkoudovatos, rouvos, honeysuckle, wild woodbine, wild olive-trees etc.
At the west side of the island, there are pine groves mainly composed of umbrella pine and Chalepi pine trees. |
