Corfu island itself could be considered as a big ecosystem composed of the productive tree "Oleo europea''. Olive trees and olive groves participate in various ways in the configuration of Corfu's landscape (for example productively, aesthetistically, protectively). Especially the perennial olive groves create a unique sensation with the endless relief forms and strange figures that carry on their trunks and branches. The olive grove of Paxos, situated in the middle of the rocks and the very little fertile ground, which gives it food and hospitality, is considered one of the most ancient olive groves. Othonoi, Erikousa and Mathraki are also full of olive trees, Besides olive trees, the cypress tree, is the most characteristic tree of Corfu's landscape and often forms cypress groves. The beauty of Corfu nature owns a
lot at the coexistence of the olive and the cypress tree, Wooden areas can be met all around Corfu's olive groves and are consisted of shaggy evergreen phyto-societies, mainly bushes, which characterize all coastal
Mediterranean landscapes. The most important species of these plants are: locust-tree, arias, holm-oak, oak, filiki, arbutus, wild arbutus, myrtle, lentisk, heather, arkoudovatos, rouvos, honeysuckle, wild woodbine, wild olive-trees etc.
At the west side of the island, there are pine groves mainly composed of umbrella pine and Chalepi pine trees. |
