The island will also satisfy less active
tourists, namely its east coast, which offers busier resorts with
many shops, restaurants, discos, water sports, boat and motorboat
hire, diving centres, car hire etc? The largest and liveliest
resort on Lefkada is the town of Nidri, the second largest on
the island. From Nidri you can see the private forest-covered
islands of Madouri, Skorpidi, Sparti and Skorpios. The island
of Skorpios belongs to the Onassis family. Aristoteles Onassis
(his bronze, larger than life statue was unveiled in mid September
2001 in Nidri harbour) bought the island from the Greek government
in 1962.
His choice of island was no doubt influenced by the exceptional
beauty of the surroundings. It is also evident that thanks to
his wealth and desire for privacy and quiet, Lefkada remained
aside of the interest of the tourist industry. Therefore, let
us enjoy the fact that we can still be part of a changing Lefkada.
Because to this day fishing and mending fishing nets, olive growing,
fertile plots of land surrounded by bare rocks, vineyards etc.
are still a usual way of making a living for the local islanders.
Traditional embroidery and lace work are also well-known and make
high quality and pleasing souvenirs. |
|
These can be purchased or simply admired
in the village of Karya in the northern part of the island. And
when you are climbing the steep, winding paths leading up into
the hills, which are occasionally veiled in cloud and where even
the smallest piece of fertile land is a treasure for the islanders,
don't forget to visit the mountain village of Eglouvi. Here they
grow lentils of a high quality and to celebrate the end of the
harvest the villagers hold traditional celebrations. The history,
gradual development and all other events, which over thousands
of years influenced the growth and current face of Lefkada, whether
it was the rule of the Venetians, Turks, French, Russians, English
or archeological finds from Achaean and Minoan cultures, can all
be seen in the Archeological museum in the island's capital. |
|
The capital of Lefkada (approximately
8000 inhabitants) is interesting in itself as is the surrounding
scenery. The historical centre with its pedestrian precinct, square
and narrow streets offers shops, cafés and restaurants.
The city is surrounded by a pier where a variety of boats and
yachts are moored. At present the largest and most modern marina
in Greece is built here. The drawbridge, medieval fortress of
San Mauro, the lighthouse, stone piers with the beautiful Ammoglossa
beach and from the other side the long sandy Gyra beach with its
typical windmills.
This, however, is by no means all that hospitable Lefkada will
enchant you with. And should you happen to lose your way during
your wanderings on the island, it will be no misfortune as you
can discover entirely new sights and views, new places for swimming,
watch the islanders doing their work etc. Lefkada is special in
that it satisfies a wide range of visitors, including those who
do not wish to bathe. |
It creates the dilemma
of what to do next year: whether to continue discovering new islands
or whether to return to the welcoming embrace of Lefkada. Because
Lefkada is a place which one should not miss on one's travels
and what's more, it's addictive.
The price of all package tours to Lefkada (with the exception
of tour no. 301) include a bus excursion to the island's capital
(sightseeing, shopping) followed by a stop for bathing at either
Agios Ioannis or Kathisma beach. |
|
Mobile telephones – there is a good
signal on most of the island, with the exception of some beaches
on the west coast and certain places in the mountains. Vassiliki,
Perigiali and Kalamitsi all have a good signal. The signal in
certain parts of Agios Nikitas is weaker. |
