Corfu Flora & Fauna
The prefecture of Corfu is washed by the Ionian Sea which is considered one of the deepest and cleanest Mediterranean seas. Several sea plantations are met in the waters of Corfu, especially the invertebrata, fishes and sea mammals. Travelling with a boat, in the seas of Corfu, you can easily meet groups of dolphins which they play at the surface of the waters. Very characteristic is the presence of the sea turtle (Caretta-Caretta) and the seal (Monachus- Monachus) which they live in the isolated coastal caves of the smaller islands of Corfu (Antipaxoi).
The land eco-systems of the prefecture offer hospitality to a lot of organisms. The invertebrata owe their dense presence to the sunshine, to the mild temperatures and to the extra humidity that exists at the prefecture during big periods of the year. The hot, warm climate of Corfu, along with lots of rainfalls, contribute to the development of the amphibian species. From reptiles, the turtles of the fresh water are marked out (Emmuw orbicolaris, Mauremuw caspica), which can be found in almost all water life places, the terrestrial turtle (testudo hermani), several species of lizards and a lot of snake species. The distinguished geographical place of the Prefecture of Corfu, in accordance with the dense vegetation and the variety of eco-systems, contributes to the presence of a rich bird-fauna.
