Corfu Facts and Figures
The Greek island of Corfu lies to the north of the Ionian sea and is characterised by its natural beauty and archaeological sites. For a bit of culture, the Archaeological Museum and the Old Fortress are the perfect places to learn more about Corfu’s history. Kavos is the most action-packed resort on the island and its excellent nightlife and shallow waters make it popular with groups of young people and families. With much richer plant life than mainland Greece, the olive groves and greenery slowly give way to rocky outcrops and beautiful coastal waters. Corfu is more than just a beach holiday and for a taste of real Greece, the islands inland villages offer the ultimate in tradition. |

Lazaretto Island, formerly known as Aghios Dimitrios, is located two nautical miles northeast of Corfu.
Lanzareto has an area of 17.5 acres and comes under the administration of the Greek National Tourist Organization. During World War II the Axis Occupation of Greece established a concentration camp there for prisoners of the Greek National Resistance movement. Remaining today are the two-storied building that served as the Headquarters of the Italian army, a small church, and the wall against which those condemned to death were shot. During Venetian rule in the early 16th century, a monastery was built on the islet and a leprosarium established later in the century, after which the island was named. In 1798, during the French occupation, the islet was occupied by the Russo-Turkish fleet, who ran it as as a military hospital. During the British occupation, in 1814, the leprosarium was once again opened after renovations, and following union with Greece in 1864 the leprosarium again saw occasional use |
